Are you a napper? Do you know someone who simply must have a quick nap every afternoon? Turns out, napping is good for you. Naps can improve cognitive function and prevent afternoon drowsiness. They can help with work productivity as well. Children require more sleep than adults, so napping is imperative for them, but naps can benefit adults as well. Naps should be kept relatively short. A nap should be 20-30 minutes long, just long enough to rest without dropping into a deep sleep. Napping longer than can actually have the opposite effect and lead to a feeling of grogginess. However, if you are a shift worker and feel sleep deprived, a nap of 1-1/2 hours can benefit you. Ultimately, a good night's sleep is the best, but napping can help counteract a poor night's sleep.
