What are amino acids? Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. They are critical for rebuilding muscle, tissue repair, and hormone production, along with many other functions. Essential amino acids are the type that we cannot make ourselves and have to consume either from food or supplements. Nonessential amino acids are the types that our bodies produce on their own. Amino acids are important for a healthy body. We need them for brain chemicals like serotonin, which is important for mood regulation, and for hormones like epinephrine, which is essential for our bodies' response to stress. Amino acids can be found in animal proteins like fish, beef, and pork. They can also be found in plants like soybeans and legumes. It is important to consume a well-balanced diet in order to get the amino acids our bodies require.
