Benadryl and Risk of Dementia

Is there a link between regular use of Benadryl and developing dementia?

Recent studies in possible causes of dementia have linked certain medications to developing dementia later in life. Benadryl is one of those medications due to the fact that it crosses the blood-brain barrier, which helps protect your brain from harmful substances and germs. This is why many people experience drowsiness when they take Benadryl. Researchers have discovered that certain drugs, including Benadryl, known as anticholinergics cause decrease in the production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is involved in learning and memory in the brain. As we age, our bodies make less acetylcholine naturally, so adding these medications can further decrease our body's ability to make this necessary chemical.

There are better and newer medications to take for antihistamine needs. Talk to your doctor about recommendations for controlling your allergies in a safer way.
