Collagen is a structural protein in our tissues. It is responsible, with other substances, in maintaining skin elasticity and moisture as well as making up proteins such as keratin, which forms skin, hair, and nails. Smoking, alcohol, and sun damage can decrease collagen production. Some people take collagen supplements. But does this really make a difference?
Studies have been done on participants taking collagen supplements, but there is no clear evidence that the collagen alone is responsible for improvement in hair and skin appearance due to the presence of other vitamins and supplements found in the collagen taken. However, a few randomized studies have shown that drinking collagen supplements with specific peptides can improve skin elasticity, moisture, and wrinkles.Â
If you choose to try a collagen supplement, check with your doctor first. Read labels and avoid those supplements with a large list of additives or fillers and check the protein profile.
