Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals in our blood, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. They are essential to the proper functioning of our heart, muscles, and bodily processes like balancing our pH levels. We need sodium in order to absorb water. Our bones need calcium to stay strong. Electrolytes help muscles contract and our heart to beat regularly. If we get low on electrolytes, we can experience symptoms like irregular heartbeat, fatigue, headaches, or muscle cramps. Dehydration can occur through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. When we are dehydrated, our electrolytes can be at low levels. Staying hydrated is essential every day. Foods like watermelon and drinks like Gatorade can help along with drinking water and consuming a balanced, nutritious diet.
