Food Dyes

ree

Dyes in food can be artificial or natural. Dyes are used to appeal to our senses and make food appear more palatable or interesting. Artificial dyes are made from petroleum products and natural dyes come from vegetables or minerals. Artificial dyes have been linked to behavioral problems in children and potential cancer risks. Europe long ago banned the use of artificial food dyes in their food, but America still uses them. There has been a recent push to remove artificial food dyes from our foods and medications due to these risks. We can avoid food dyes by limiting our intake of ultra-processed foods. Stick to natural whole foods and avoid drinks with artificial dyes. It's important to read labels before giving our kids artificial ingredients including dyes.
