Green Tea: Is it worth the hype?

Jason Shirley

For several years now, we have been seeing the predominance of green tea in tea and coffee shops, restaurants, and bistros. It's even on store shelves everywhere. It can be purchased as tea leaves for steeping to drink, as matcha powder to add into smoothies and foods, or concentrated into capsules. There's even matcha ice cream!

Green tea is well known to the Asian community and has long been used in their culture. Green tea is known to contain many antioxidants as well as less caffeine than black tea. It contains properties that can help with brain function as well as supporting weight loss efforts. Antioxidants help to combat free radicals in the blood and may help prevent some types of cancers. Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties, and it can help reduce LDL cholesterol. While all tea has polyphenols and antioxidants, green tea possesses more antioxidants than other types of tea. Talk to your doctor about adding green tea to your diet!
