Hiatal Hernia

What is a hiatal hernia? This is a small pouch of stomach pushing up through the diaphragm. Most of the time this is small and doesn’t cause problems, but some people can have symptoms such as heartburn.

Hiatal hernias are fairly common, affecting up to 20% of the population. There are different degrees of hiatal hernia, but most are small and don’t cause symptoms. A hiatal hernia can be diagnosed with certain scans or by a procedure called an esophagogastroduodenoscopy of EGD. An EGD is done by a doctor inserting a camera into your esophagus and stomach while you are sedated. Typically people with heartburn symptoms from hiatal hernia can use acid reducers like Prilosec or Tums to manage symptoms. Consuming smaller meals throughout the day can also help with symptoms.
