Summer is officially here, and that means more time spent outside enjoying the weather! The
kids are out of school. There's swimming, gardening, riding bikes, cooking on the grill....the days are longer, and many people enjoy just being outside.
Hotter days mean more sweating, and more sweating means fluid loss. Hydrating is always important, because our bodies and brains require water to survive and function at optimal levels, but hydrating in hotter weather is even more important. Many people do not consume enough water daily and often have low levels of dehydration. Most adults need somewhere around 8 glasses of water per day for optimal hydration. Of course, certain health conditions may require a person to drink less than 8 glasses of water, and someone who works in a physically challenging job or athletes may require more than the standard 8 glasses per day. How much water do you need to stay healthy?
So how can you ensure that you get enough water each day? One way you can do this is to keep a large refillable water bottle with you on your desk or in your car. Some water bottles have markings indicating how much water you have drunk that day. Another way is adding fruit or flavoring to your water to make it more enticing, such as lemon or lime juice, or flavoring packets found at the grocery store. There are even diffusing style water bottles that enable you to place fresh fruit in a chamber in the water to flavor the water.
Enjoy your summer, and remember to drink that water!
