Many illnesses, such as autoimmune disease, arthritis, or even cancer, can be triggered by inflammation. The foods we consume can help or hinder. A natural anti-inflammatory diet can help. Highly processed foods such as margarine or refined sugars can ramp up inflammation and make symptoms worse. Consuming a diet high in these foods can trigger weight gain, which is also a marker for inflammation and can lead to type 2 diabetes. Olive oil, green leafy vegetables, certain fish, and berries are naturally anti-inflammatory. Even coffee, which contains polyphenol--a compound found in plants--can help reduce inflammation. The Mediterranean diet has shown to be a healthy anti-inflammatory diet and includes many naturally anti-inflammatory foods.
