One of the food groups, protein is important to our health and wellness. It's in every cell of the human body! Protein in your diet is essential because it helps your body repair cells and make new ones. It is responsible for building and repairing muscle and other tissues and is important for children to develop and grow. Protein has amino acids, which are responsible for maintaining good health. Amino acids are found in animal sources, such as meat, fish, and milk. They can also be found in certain plant sources such as beans and legumes. The different types of amino acids are essential, nonessential, and conditional. Essential amino acids cannot be made by the body and must be supplied by food. Nonessential amino acids are made by the body from essential amino acids, and conditional amino acids are needed in times of stress. Talk to your doctor about your individual protein needs, as everyone's varies. Children need different amounts depending on their age.Â
